Waldorf Remedial Education
M.S. Ed in Waldorf Education / Certificate Program
The next cycle of study begins July 9th, 2007, applications are currently being accepted.
In our classrooms we often find students who, although possessing normal intelligence, still have difficulty learning in the school environment and adjusting to the demands posed by life today. The purpose of this program is to assist educators and therapists in the process of learning to “read” such students. Through these practiced observations we form relationships based on a deeper understanding of each student, out of which we then develop specific supportive activities. Pedagogical, remedial and therapeutic approaches are included. Throughout the program the personal and professional development of the teacher is addressed.
The Waldorf Remedial Education Program is a part-time program that runs for three years. Each year includes three sessions: a summer session (two weeks for certificate students, three weeks for Master’s), and a session each November and March (four days each for certificate students, and five days for Master’s). Participants are expected to attend all sessions and complete all assignments. Each session includes:
Themes and studies that focus on pedagogical and medical issues
Artistic activity relating to the theme and fostering personal enrichment
Practical work for the teacher in the classroom
Personal growth activities such as biography work and meditation
Processes involved in child observation and child studies
Each participant is provided with the guidance of a mentor, an experienced specialist in the field, who will assist in the application of our studies. On-site visits and monthly contact are built into the program.
Course Requirements
Participants must be trained teachers or professionals with at least two years of classroom or clinical experience. Course requirements are adjusted for each participant’s professional field. A kindergarten teacher, for instance, may have different assignments than someone training for Teacher Educational Support work or remedial work in a school. Participants are expected to attend all nine sessions and complete assignments that include practice, exercises, artistic work, readings, and case studies for presentation.
Certification / Master’s Degree
At the end of three years, participants receive a Certificate of Completion from Sunbridge College and the Association for a Healing Education (AHE). Participants who have completed the requisite extra course work — an additional week of classes each summer, an additional day each fall and spring, and an independent project — are eligible to receive an M.S.Ed. in Waldorf Remedial Education, accredited by the Board of Regents of the State of New York.
