Presentation

Sign Language Certificate Program: The Sign Language Interpreting Certificate Program is offered through the Languages & Humanities Department at Northern Marianas College. It is designed to train interpreters for young Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.

To earn a Sign Language Interpreting Certificate from NMC, students will have to meet the English requirements of the college. They can, however, begin the Sign Language classes at any time, as long as they can understand their instructor and comprehend the written materials assigned in the courses. A total of 24 credit hours are required to complete this certificate.

This course is designed to teach students how to interpret in the educational setting. Starting with simple material and increasing in difficulty each week, students will learn to facilitate communication for Deaf children, teenagers, and adults that is typically found in a classroom. Students will learn appropriate placement, use of professional techniques to handle difficult situations, use of mouthing, facial grammar and conceptually accurate signs as appropriate for various individuals. Students will practice to achieve smooth, readable fingerspelling, appropriate number use, and the incorporation of ASL grammatical features into their delivery. There will be practice interpreting for Deaf children and adults asking questions, talking with peers, and making presentations to their class. Students will role play for one another various roles as teachers, same-age peers, and the Deaf individual.
