The University of California at Berkeley first offered professional education in architecture in 1903.
The original four year degree expanded to a five-year Bachelor of Architecture program in 1953, and in 1968, Berkeley became the first U.S. school of Architecture to adopt the "4-2 plan," a four-year pre-professional Bachelor of Arts degree in architecture followed by a two year professional Master of Architecture program.
The professional degree Master of Architecture, first offered in 1958, eventually became a three tiered program, varying in length from one to three years, depending upon previous degrees and experience.
In the early 1970’s a Ph.D. program was inaugurated allowing students the opportunity to pursue advanced research. Another research-based degree, the Master of Science began admitting students in Fall of 1995.
The Berkeley architecture faculty --thirty-three tenure track professors supported by approximately 15 visiting lecturers and adjunct professors--represents the spectrum of the many disciplines comprising contemporary architectural education.
