Drawing directly upon the unique media resources of the nation’s capital, the photojournalism program is an ideal training ground for a new generation of creative newspaper and magazine photographers. The faculty includes leading members of the White House News Photographers’ Association as well as renowned picture professionals working at the nearby National Geographic Society. These practitioner-teachers are esteemed not only for their technical skills but also for their special understanding of the problems and responsibilities associated with creating images of national and world events, places, and peoples.

Located in the heart of Washington’s media and governmental district, the Corcoran offers photojournalism students access to a constant stream of news and documentary subjects. In the classroom, students learn photography skills, digital workflow, and professional business, legal and ethical subjects in a structured curriculum that includes core classes, technical courses, and academics geared to their unique needs. The sophomore photojournalism core curriculum includes a fine-art component as well, reinforcing the unique artistic integrity of the program. Students in junior and senior core classes complete regular assignments that mirror professional experience and also work on their own self-assigned, long-term projects. By the end of the senior year each student is expected to have developed a portfolio of published and unpublished pictures that is suitable for finding a staff or free-lance position. Senior photojournalism majors also create a coherent body of their work that can be exhibited in the galleries of the Corcoran Museum of Art.
