Presentation

Managers in technical areas frequently started as experts and became managers because of their technical skills. This leaves them ill prepared for one of the toughest management challenges – leading technical and knowledge workers in the modern economy. This program provides insights, tools and techniques to help all managers hold those powerful but difficult conversations with their direct reports.

Coaching for Technical Managers is founded on the premise that leaders are expected to help their staff grow and develop. They must use their coaching skills to help average employees become good and good employees become great. This program is valuable for all managers interested in sharpening their coaching skills and having difficult conversations with their direct reports. However, technical managers often face an especially difficult challenge because their initial success has been in their technical competency, not in their ability to manage and coach others. We have incorporated special content into the program designed to make this transition clearer and easier.

In Coaching for Technical Managers, you will discuss the components of an effective coaching relationship, from establishing rapport to rewarding excellent performance. You will receive feedback using a multi-rater instrument specifically focused on coaching behaviors. A model designed to provide a specific plan of action for approaching coaching situations will be presented and used as part of the activities. This program helps you understand behavior and what interests different people and leads to their commitment. If you know what really excites them, you can help them perform to their maximum.

Through a series of coaching vignettes, which are videotaped, you will practice using a coaching model that surfaces the elements of an effective coaching session. In such a session, the coach and coached work together to:

  • Understand the current performance level
  • Clarify goals for the future
  • Evaluate any problems
  • Identify options for goal completion
  • Set performance standards and commit to a plan. Replaying the videotape and debriefing in small groups will enable you to refine your approach to coaching.
The goals of the Coaching Program are to:
  • Assess coaching skills by identifying key strengths and weaknesses as perceived by you and others.
  • Developing your own skills in coaching to build on strengths and neutralize weaknesses
  • Provide a model for understanding what others need from you as a coach
  • Help you understand your own preferences and the preferences of others in order to more effectively help them grow and develop
  • Develop skills in handling difficult conversations
  • Increase the motivation and ability to set and achieve personal and organizational goals.
