Presentation
In the first year, each student takes the same Core Studio courses, enabling individuals in different majors to work together and learn from one another. The Core program also helps establish a level playing field, so that each student artist comes from more similar experiences. Many joke that it is an intense "art boot camp" with an emphasis on creative exploration. Students are trained to see through a different set of eyes, preparing the way for later experiences in their chosen major.
A Drawing Course. Both drawing classes explore measurement and perspective, the representation of form and space, value, volume, light and shadow. This section is recommended for GIC, ID, and CA majors, as it may also emphasize analytical drawing, perspective sketching, production of thumbnails, invented space and problem solving. Offered in the Fall semester.
A Color course. Both color classes explore color structure and relationships, color mixing, communication and expression, additive and subtractive models and color symbolism. This section , Observational Color, is recommended for CA, IL, and ID Majors and it may also emphasize working from direct observation, color and pictorial space, opaque/transparent, physical application, translation and recording of 3D forms and personal expression.
