Cosmetology

Course Description

During the first year of instruction, students are introduced to basic skills such as shampooing, scalp treatment, manicuring, hair styling, chemical texturizing, and hair cutting.  Safety, sanitation, and hygiene are stressed as important parts of each job.  As students progress, emphasis is placed on the perfection of basic skills.  Removal of superfluous hair, thermal waving and curling, chemical hair relaxing, and skin care and make-up are added to the curriculum during the second year.  In their last year, students receive an intensive review of all skills and theory.  In addition, hair coloring, hair lightening, electricity, chemistry, shop management, and state laws are taught.  All students receive on-the-job training as receptionists and supply clerks.  Students learn the importance of customer relations, salesmanship, and how to apply and interview for a job.

Students should like to work with their hands in the field of cosmetology.  Successful completion of 1250 hours during this three-year program makes the student eligible to take the State Board Examination for a cosmetology license.

Prerequisites:  Students should have excellent attendance as well as average to above average grades, and must have completed ninth grade.

Job Outlook

Future industry appears promising. New techniques, new products, and new opportunities appear every day. The number of patrons who visit beauty salons and the amount of money they spend for services are constantly increasing.

Most of the GACTC's former program completers take and pass state boards.  Many of these own or are employed in local salons.  Others have advanced into management positions.  Some have gone on to college in workforce education and other related fields.

With reference to your own future, there seems to be no limit to the progress you can make or the amount of money you can earn.  How fast and how far you go will depend primarily on the effort you make and on the seriousness with which you approach your training.

Opportunities exist at technical schools, junior colleges, most commonwealth campuses and at accredited four year colleges and universities.
