Presentation
Cosmetology is a two-year program which prepares students for careers in the field of Cosmetology. Students study anatomy, dermatology, desairology, basic chemistry as it applies to cosmetology, interpersonal communication, principles of business and fiscal management, purchasing and inventory control, and much more. Salon operation and management prepares students for college majors in business management, in addition to mastering professional techniques for hair, skin, and nail care. Additionally, this program prepares students for the New York State Board Licensing Exam. In order to be eligible to take the exam, students must receive 1,000 hours of instruction. This includes a 15-day summer session at the end of the junior year.
Course Description
Cosmetology students spend time in class learning everything they need to know to become a cosmetologist, as well as how to operate a business of their own. A fully equipped laboratory and beauty salon provides students with the opportunity to practice what they have learned in the classroom through hands-on training and instruction. This program provides excellent preparation for business majors as students extend their knowledge of business principles through real-world practice, operating their own salon on campus during their senior year. Students manage everything from receiving customer phone calls to booking appointments, to ordering inventory, to performing basic recordkeeping, and providing hair, nail, and skin care services to regular outside customers. Academic requirements are rigorous as students prepare to take the New York State Board Exam. The written portion of the exam requires basic knowledge of human anatomy and chemistry as they relate to cosmetology. Study topics include dermatology, diseases and disorders of the skin and hair, phycial structures of the face, head, and feet, chemistry and chemicals, and more. A practical portion of the exam is administered under state regulations by a New York State examiner. Excellent attendance is critical to success in this program. Additionally, students participate in leadership development activities such as creating a business plan, coordinating special events, attending industry trade-shows, giving oral and demonstrative presentations, and creating a portfolio of their work.
