Full-Time Career Programs - Cosmetology
 
 Students completing the basic requirements of the Oklahoma Board of Cosmetology may work with clients in a salon setting under the supervision of a licensed instructor.
 
The Cosmetology program offers study in the areas of haircutting, hair styling, permanent waving, hair coloring, hair and scalp analysis, scalp treatments, shampooing and rinsing, chemical hair relaxing, manicures and pedicures, acrylic, gel and fiberglass artificial nails and disorder, massage, facials, salon business, and hair removal.

The daytime program is offered to high school juniors and seniors. The basic Cosmetology program takes two school years to complete. You may choose the morning session from 8:10 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. or the afternoon session from 12:40 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Both morning and afternoon sessions meet Monday through Friday.

The evening program has been designed for adults. It takes approximately 16 months to complete the 1500 clock hours required. This program meets Monday through Thursday from 3:35 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. A 600-hour manicurist and a 1,000 or 500 hour instructor program are also available through the evening program.

After completing either course, you will be eligible to take the State Board exam. Upon passing the exam, you may obtain a license.

EQUIPMENT USED
You will learn to use the clippers, blow dryers, razor, marcel irons, shears, pedispa, high frequency rake, Ecohair facial machine, facial waxing machine, conditioning heating caps and other specialized equipment during your Cosmetology training.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Salons offer positions as cosmetologists who do all aspects of the Cosmetology Profession; or manicurists who perform manicures, pedicures, and apply artificial nails. You can be self-employed by renting a salon booth or by owning your own salon. Positions such as cosmetic chemist, cosmetology instructor, make-up artist, or facialist may be obtained after further education. Work hours can generally be set to fit anyone's schedule due to the flexibility of the trade.

Skills Needed for Success
Good communication and social skills are a must in this profession. Manual dexterity is also needed to perform the above-mentioned activities.

Hours/Benefits
Work hours are generally a 40-hour workweek, though overtime or split shifts may be necessary for some companies. Salary ranges are $1,200-$2,300 for month. Fringe benefits may include medical and life insurance, retirement plan, paid vacations and holidays, and sick leave.
