Early Childhood Education
Have you always enjoyed helping little children? Do you find it a pleasure to nurture and guide them? Do you think that shaping and stimulating young minds is one of the most important jobs anyone could have? Then Early Childhood Education could be for you!
It's big business! Employment in this field is expected to grow faster than the national average as a result of the post-baby boomers' increase in the number of children. More than half of all mothers are working outside the home. Finding responsible child care was the number one concern of working moms in a recent study.
Your hands-on work will emphasize learning how children develop physically, socially, emotionally, and mentally through classroom instruction and discussion. Students also participate in the supervised operation of an on-site licensed preschool for three and four year olds, giving the students the opportunity to observe the development of children and apply this learning while assisting in the preschool classroom. Students plan the activities, curriculum, even the menus for the children and plan a variety of activities in music, art, science, language, and number work. In addition, students receive training in first aid, recognition and prevention of communicable diseases and recognition of child abuse and neglect. Seniors will also intern at local day care facilities.
You can use your training for a career in child care centers, pre-schools, elementary schools, Head Start, or as a teacher's aide. With further education, you could become a special education teacher, social worker, speech therapist, elementary school teacher, or even run your own child care business!
