 The Marketing/Fashion Merchandising Program fulfills the mission and objective of Briarwood College by providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to adapt to a continuously changing fashion merchandising work environment. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to think, to make decisions, to interact effectively, to use creativity to solve problems, and to communicate using the latest technology. The skills of writing, listening, and speaking are important components of all Marketing/Fashion Merchandising courses and programs. We require our students to integrate and apply their classroom knowledge and technology skills with practical and relevant on-site work experience. The knowledge and skills taught provide our students with the tools for personal and professional development and success in the workplace.

Career Information

There are many different and new career occupations that are included in the Fashion Merchandising industry such as:

Fashion Buyer: Works closely with account executives and store managers to select appropriate merchandise to sell in stores. Becomes knowledgeable about current and future trends by traveling to national and international fashion markets.

Product Developer: Creative problem solver who determines the most efficient method of mass-producing garments at a specific price point. Becomes knowledgeable about international trade and global markets.

Special Events Coordinator: Responsible for organizing special events, such as fashion shows, both inside and outside the store. Often communicates notable news regarding the store to the press and the industry.

Retail Manager: Works in a department or specialty store. Hires, trains and manages employees, tracks sales, works directly with account coordinators and buyers. This is a fast-paced career with a tremendous variety in day-to-day job functions.

Trainer/Developer: Energetic person who organizes and conducts training seminars for new and existing employees. This is a fun profession for someone who enjoys public speaking, motivating others and traveling. May work for a retailer or consulting firm.

Moreover, new careers have developed such as: Trend Directors, Product Managers, and Private Branding. The field of Fashion Merchandising is very promising with the changing face of the global fashion industry.
