Presentation

As you place pencil to paper, an idea begins to form. Then, using the fundamentals of your art - drawing, painting, color, composition, visual concepts and media - you begin to visually communicate your message in your own personal style and artistic voice. At the heart of every illustration, there is a story to be told, a problem to be solved or a point of view to be expressed.

At Ringling School of Art and Design, you will learn technical skills in a variety of media while developing the conceptual talents that will help you to visually convey your message. Whether your career lies in print, electronic media, in film or in multimedia environments, your illustrations will serve to stimulate the mind and spark the imagination - all the while communicating their inherent message.

Surveys illustration from the late Victorian era through the present. Emphasizes achievements of famous designers and illustrators, as well as sociological, economic and political factors which influenced schools and styles of art and design.

Focuses on the analysis, development, and design of Internet communications. Students research and investigate image and text preparation, and basic Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) programming. This course does not fulfill a "New-Media" requirement for GIC Majors. Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop is strongly recommended.

Focuses on advanced Macintosh computer-aided illustration skills and techniques. Topics include: mixed media and experimental image making, preparation of traditional and digital illustration for print and electronic media, and the job market. Concept development, aesthetics, technology and personal style are emphasized.

Portrait painting is an age-old tradition. Successful portraiture is a direct result of training one's eyes to see, practicing new techniques and intensive life study. This course is designed for students to explore the discipline of painting representationally. Successful realistic painting begins with life study and the habitual practice of life drawing. A sketchbook and resource/inspiration book will be required. Traditional methods of representation and the development of a more personal, interpretive approach to painting will be investigated. Prerequisite: IL 271 Illustration Media or permission of instructor.

Instruction in contemporary children's book illustration. Assignments include selection of a picture book, text preparation of a finished dummy and completion of several finished samples.

Offers students the opportunity to master the craft of painting and drawing. Includes various techniques from glazing to alla prima impasto. Reinforces non-toxic applications of figure painting and drawing materials. Pre-requisites: Two years of figure drawing and one year of figure painting. Students who do not meet the pre-requisite criteria, must have instructor's permission to enroll, and would enroll on a space available basis.

An Illustration studio elective open to third- and fourth-year students that explores a variety of problem-solving methods that creatively utilize analogy and metaphor in order to communicate visual ideas. Slide presentations and discussions provide a historical context as well as provide an overview of contemporary issues and approaches. Projects are balanced between instructor provided assignments and student-generated directions. Enrollment by non-Illustration majors is encouraged, but strong drawing and media skills are a must.
