Presentation

The English major combines breadth of curriculum with the in-depth study possible in a program emphasizing seminars and writing workshops. Students may choose a literary or a writing emphasis, depending on their future career goals and interests. Philosophically committed to helping students explore a wide diversity of writers and writing practices, the program exposes its majors to traditional masters of British and American literature along with the emerging voices of women and people of color, as well as literatures from India, Japan, and Russia.

Major: A minimum of 39 credit hours. The recommended schedule for the first two years is the same for both emphases within the major, though students may adjust their plan to meet their personal interests, course availability, or other individual factors.

First, as an introduction to either emphasis within the major, students must take 110 (or test out), 200, 225 or 226, 230 and 240.

Students pursuing the literature emphasis are required to take one advanced course in language study and one in composition: The language requirement can be satisfied by 301, 370, or 380; the advanced composition requirement by 304, 305, 306, 311, 312 or 315. Students planning to teach English in secondary schools must take 301 and 311. Students pursuing the literature emphasis must take advanced seminars on special topics within broadly defined national and historical constraints, as follows: 300, 310, 320, 330, 340, and 361.

Students pursuing the writing emphasis are required to select two courses from 300, 310, 320, 330, and 340. All students in the writing emphasis must take 361 and one course from among 301, 370 or 380. In addition, students must take four courses from 115, 215, 239, 304, 305, 306, 312 and 315.

Students who are exempt from 110 on the basis of ACT/SAT scores must still meet the 39 credit-hour requirement.

Minor: A minimum of 18 credit hours including English 230, 240, and four courses at the 200 or 300 level. In consultation with their advisor, students are encouraged to design a minor suited to their particular goals and interests. The minor may emphasize the study of writing as well as literature.
