Introduction

The Mathematics Department offers various entry-level courses for freshman and sophomore students. Developmental courses are available for students who need additional instruction before entering a college-level curriculum. College-level courses that satisfy Southern Union graduation requirements will also transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

Developmental Mathematics Courses
(Placement Policies)
The COMPASS mathematics placement test is given to new students to assist them in appropriate selection of courses. Students who have met any of the following criteria will not be required to take the placement test:

Transient student
Score of 20(or higher) on the ACT mathematics section
Score of 480(or higher) on the SAT mathematics section
Previous credit for a college-level mathematics course
The following scores on the COMPASS test will be used for initial placement in courses:

MTH 090 - Prealgebra (35 or below)
MTH 098 - Prealgebra (36 – 100) or Algebra (0 – 27)
MTH 100 - Algebra (28 –65)
MTH 112 - Algebra (66 –100) or College Algebra (0 – 45)
MTH 113 - College Algebra (46 – 100) or Trigonometry (0 – 45)
MTH 125 - Trigonometry (46 – 100)
If a student tests into a developmental course, he/she will be given another test on the first day of class to confirm the placement.

The mathematics faculty consists of highly qualified professionals who are dedicated to providing effective instruction and assistance to students. Faculty members are available and accessible to students.

SCHEDULE FOR EACH DAY

8:30 - 8:50 Registration in the Student Center of the Wadley Campus
9:00 - 10:30 Written Exams
10:30 - 12:00 Lunch in the school cafeteria(cost included in the registration fee)
12:00 - 1:30 Ciphering Match in Renaissance Center
1:45 - 2:15 Awards Ceremony in Renaissance Center

COMPETITION CATEGORIES AND SCORING

There will be an individual and team competition for each category.

Individual – an individual’s score will be the total points earned on the written exam and the total of any ciphering points earned.

Team – a team for each category will consist of four members. The team score will be determined by adding all four individual scores. If a team has fewer than four members, the team score is still determined by adding the individual scores. Alternates will not be permitted.

AWARDS

Awards will be presented to the three highest scoring teams and the three highest scoring individuals in each competition.

REGISTRATION

In order to compete in the Southern Union Mathematics Tournament, each school must return a pre-registration form. A five-dollar registration fee for each team member may be paid the day of the tournament. This fee includes lunch. Alternates will not be permitted.

RULES OF ELIGIBILITY

In an effort to make the competition fair and manageable, the following rules were formulated. Please examine the rules to determine which of your students may compete in the different competitions.

In order to compete in the Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-calculus competitions, a student must be currently enrolled in that course or have completed that course this school year.
Any student may compete in the Comprehensive competition.
A student may only compete in the Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-calculus competitions once.
A student may compete in the Comprehensive competition more than once.
1A, 2A, 3A, and private schools may participate in the comprehensive competition, but they must come on April 12, 2007 for that competition.

COMPOSITION OF EXAMS

Each category will have a timed exam lasting one and one-half hours.
There will be thirty multiple-choice questions counting five points each.
Each student will be asked to solve two tie-breakers. The solution to each tie-breaker must be shown in its entirety.
There will be no penalty for incorrect responses.
The Precalculus competition will include the topics of trigonometry and advanced algebra.
The Comprehensive test will include topics from calculus, analysis, and the four other categories.
Calculators will not be permitted .

CIPHERING

The ciphering contest will be held in the Renaissance Center. Each student will be presented two questions. A two-minute time limit will be imposed on each question. Scoring will be as follows:

1st correct response - 5 points
2nd correct response - 4 points
3rd correct response - 3 points
4th correct response - 2 points
All other correct responses - 1 point

In the event of a tie, the same number of points will be awarded to each correct respondent.
