MEDICAL BILLING PROGRAM
(CERTIFICATE PROGRAM)
OBJECTIVE
The Medical Billing Program provides individuals with the basic fundamentals of medical insurance policies and procedures disciplines. Individuals choosing to continue studies in Medical Billing after completion of the certification, become Registered Record Technicians (RRT), and Assistant Record Technicians (ART). This accelerated 390 clock program will cover the basic competencies of ICD-9 and CPT-4 coding. The theory behind languages of diseases as it relates to acceptable collections codes recognized by the National Health Career Association (NHA). Development of computer skills and mathematic formations for familiarity with contracts issues, and various types of health insurance computations. Understanding medical terminology and utilizing it to recognize various report components of a medical record and its deficiencies. Each course is designed to enhance the occupational skills of individuals in preparing for entry-level positions as an insurance billing clerk, or claims processing clerk within the insurance industry.OPPORTUNITIES

Students must be high school graduates or the equivalent. They must also obtain passing scores on the school's entrance test and on the interview conducted by the Admissions Department. Basic computer operating skills are required.EQUIPMENT
Students train on the appropriate equipment, including computers, network hardware and related equipment consistent with the demands of the job market. One computer is available for each student.PROGRAM LENGTH
This program may be offered in the morning, afternoon or evening sessions. The morning session is taught 4 days per week for approximately 22 weeks of instruction. In the afternoon or evening sessions, this program is taught 4 evenings per week for approximately 22 weeks of instruction. CP100 Introduction to Computers
(2.0 Semester Credit Hours, No Prerequisite)
This course introduces students to the field of information systems and serves as an orientation to computer concepts and terminology. It includes the history of computers and the social implications of widespread use of computers. The development of computers as well as their current design, is described. The concepts of data acquisition, internal representation, and processing into useful information are discussed. Additional topics include user interfaces, programming languages, and communication systems. Students will also gain experience with Web search engines and learn techniques to collect data and do research.0S101 Basic Keyboarding & Typing
(2.0 Semester Credit Hours, No Prerequisite)
Keyboarding skills are developed on the alphabetic keyboard using the microcomputer. The student learns the fundamentals of centering text, tabulation, and letter placement. A minimum speed of 45 words per minute is achieved.OS240 Word Processing Concepts
(Prerequisite CP100, 3.0 Credit Hours)
Students develop the skills to create a variety of business documents including business letters and memos, reports, resumes, and brochures. The students become proficient in the features of Microsoft Word through laboratory exercises where word processing concepts are emphasized. Students learn the basics of formatting text, paragraphs, and tables, creating headers and footers, setting up documents for printing, sorting of information.MS340 Medical Terminology
(3 Semester Credit Hours, No Prerequisite)
This course instructs student in basic knowledge of the human body, its functions and causes and symptoms of diseases. Heavy emphasis on the origins of medical words roots, suffix and prefix. Students are taught medical vocabulary, including pronunciation and usage of words in medical environmenMS346 Medical Coding
(Prerequisite MS340, 3 Semester Credit Hours)
Learn the purpose of diagnostic and procedural coding. How to apply the codes to physician treatment plans. Student will engage a series of exercises applying codes to diseases and general medical services. Proper forms and formats covering multiple insurance companies will be reviewed and discussed.MS 344 Medical Billing & Insurance Procedure
(7 Semester Credit Hours, Prerequisite: CP100)
The theory of health insurance and descriptions of the various types of health insurance coverage and their terms will be introduced in this course. Processing insurance claims and follow-up on insurance claims will be covered. Student will learn to determine fees, and how to obtain credit information about the patient. Recording transactions, computing charges and imputing appropriate codes for services rendered. Collections and receiving payments will be reviewed and discussed
