  7. The Medical Laboratory Technology program prepares graduates to play a crucial role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) perform laboratory tests that assist in the discovery of the absence, presence, extent, and causes of diseases.

    The Medical Laboratory Technology program provides students with an education in clinical laboratory science. The program meets the educational requirements set by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA). Students develop the knowledge and skills for clinical laboratory tests needed to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The MLT performs general tests in all laboratory areas including blood banking, chemistry, hematology, immunology and microbiology.

    Medical Laboratory Technicians need to have the qualities listed below:

    Good problem solvers

    Are accurate, reliable, work well under pressure and are able to finish a task once started
    Communicate well
    Set high standards for themselves and expect quality in the work they do
    Are deeply committed to their profession

    Graduates are eligible to sit for National Registry examinations, including the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel, Inc (NCA) and American Medical Technologists (AMT).Career Opportunities
    According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, about one-half of Clinical Laboratory Technologists and Technicians work in hospitals. Most of the remaining jobs are found in medical laboratories or offices and clinics of physicians. Others work in blood banks, research and testing laboratories, and in the Federal Government — at U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs hospitals and U.S. Public Health Service facilities.
