Presentation
The Pharmacy Technician works under the supervision of a pharmacist and is a vital part of a retail pharmacy or in-house pharmacy team. Technicians are required to learn medication names, actions, uses and doses. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are needed to interact with patients, co-workers, healthcare professionals, and customers.
Pharmacy Technicians help licensed Pharmacists perform almost every function in a pharmacy.
Pharmacy Technicians:
Have strong interpersonal skills
Are customer-service focused
Are detail oriented and precise
Graduates of the Pharmacy Technician program may expect to have careers that service the pharmacy needs of patients, as well as pharmaceutical companies engaged in the research and production of new medications.
Pharmacy Technicians may work in hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities, community health centers, and for pharmaceutical companies. Pharmacy Technicians also may have the opportunity to work in retail and on-line pharmacies. Many retail pharmacies offer career tracks to management positions to qualified and outstanding employees. These opportunities need to be pursued by potential students for clarity at the individual retail pharmacies in the community.
Career Opportunities
Employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2010 due to the increased pharmaceutical needs of a larger and older population, and to the greater use of medication. There are many opportunities for full- and part-time work in retail and hospital settings.
