Topics include landscape, portraiture, the snapshot and commercial applications of black and white, color and non-silver processes. Integrates ideas from printmaking, painting, sculpture and recent critical theory.

An introductory course covering the use of both manual and digital 35mm cameras, exposure calculation, film developing, black and white custom printing and print presentation. An introduction to developing visual concepts and an individual style is given and student's photographic skills are further refined through practical assignments, critiques, slide shows and extensive lab work. A cross section of advanced techniques designed to develop skills necessary to translate creative ideas into finished photographs. Individual guidance and comparative study of alternative processes such as the Sabattier and bas-relief effect, split-toning, infra-red, litho film and high-contrast, and photomontage in preparation for electronic-still photography. Pre-requisite: PH 250. Not open to PDI majors.

Explores the creative use of color in contemporary commercial and experimental photography. Students learn about different color films and papers, processes, subtractive color theory, printing from color negatives and outputting digital files using ink-jet printers. Aesthetic and critical issues are discussed to help students use color effectively to prepare a final portfolio. Pre-requisite: PH 250 or EL 251. Not open to PDI majors.

Fundamentals of continuous tungsten lighting. Artificial sources of light are studied and analyzed to enable students to discern and employ light effectively and creatively. Studio assignments are designed to introduce control and applications of tungsten lighting. Pre-requisite: PH 250 or EL 251. Not open to PDI majors.

This course undertakes the theoretical and practical aspects of producing theme-based sequential photographs as well as examine the conventions of the written word, the photographic image, and how they may interact with one another. Students will work on a series of exercises that consider how photographic images form narratives and how bookbinding can be complementary to the content, rather than an after thought. Working with traditional and non-traditional photographic media, incorporating text and photographs, students will create their own 'one-of-a-kind photographic books' as they explore the process of constructing narratives. Prerequisite: Third and fourth year PDI majors; others, if space is available, with permission of instructor.

An introduction to both technical and aesthetic foundations in photography utilizing digital camera techniques. Problems in exposure, lighting, composition, camera controls, file management, image adjustments and digital printing will be covered. Development of each student's personal vision will be encouraged as well as knowledge of the medium's history and current practices. This course replaces PH 250 B & W Photo. Students who have taken PH 250 may not take this course. A Digital SLR Camera is required for all PDI Majors and Minors.
